Honour for green power campaigner
AN ECO campaigner whose solar panelled house pumps power into the National Grid has been recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony.
Dr Alan Morton, of Twyford Avenue, Muswell Hill, narrowly lost out on being named environmentalist of the year at the Archant London Environ-mental Awards.
He took silver prize and dedicated it to the Muswell Hill Sustainability Group, which he chairs, saying "it's as much for the group as for me".
The scientist and trainee teacher at Alexandra Park School, said: "I was delighted to be honoured. It's nice to have your efforts recognised."
Dr Morton hit the headlines in October when it was revealed his conventional 1930s house had been reborn as TWYFORD power station.
Six photovoltaic panels on the roof pumped out 500 units of electricity over the summer - 40 per cent of which went straight into the National Grid.
He is also an avid recycler, makes his own compost, and was at the forefront of the Sustainability Group's successful bid to set up Muswell Hill as a low carbon zone.
"As an area we're well informed about the problems of climate change and energy, and a lot of people want to do something, but it's quite difficult to know what," said Dr Morton.
"That's the purpose of the group - to think about what can be done and set about doing it."
The ceremony was held at the New Providence Wharf Radisson Hotel in Canary Wharf on November 20 and was organised by Archant London, publisher of the Journal.
Dr Morton could not attend to collect his plaque as he was teaching a science class at the time.
