Drunken yobs in pile-up fears

DRUNKEN thugs hurling heavy street signs into a main road at night could cause a fatal pile-up, it was claimed.

The fears surfaced as residents in Muswell Hill discussed the on-going crisis with anti-social revellers littering and fighting.

Derek Davies, of Muswell Hill, said he is woken on a nightly basis by "abusive" people running down

his street smashing bottles and throwing temporary roadwork barriers into traffic.

He said: "The barriers aren't secured properly so when these tribes come up the road they just grab the first thing that comes to hand. Muswell Hill is a fast road and it's even faster at night. Why somebody's not been killed when they throw those road signs about is beyond me. It is frightening down there. They are guarding the nightclubs but what about our houses?"

His comments came at a Muswell Hill and Fortis Green Association meeting. He further accused Haringey Council of failing to protect residents by granting alcohol licences to a cluster of clubs who are unable to contain anti-social youngsters once they leave the venue.

Muswell Hill ward councillor Gail Engert urged bar owners to stamp patrons as they come in. She said: "Police would be able to pick up people who are way over the limit. It is absolutely fundamental."

Licensing officer Dahlia Barrett denied the council has been "handing out" licenses to whoever applies

for one.

She said: "Anyone is able to apply for anything available as long as they meet the criteria. It's the duty of every applicant to serve a copy to the police. If they have any issues with those applications they have just as much ability to write in and say no, we object to this."

Chief Inspector Jon Williams, in charge of all of the Safer Neighbour-hoods Teams in Haringey, urged residents to contact police if problems persist.

He said: "It seems that frequently people don't tell us about these issues. We task resources on the basis of reported incident, if we're not told about things that happen, we can't act on them.
