PUPILS at a secondary school discovered that crime definitely doesn't pay during a series of workshops with police and other emergency services last week.
The "Prison? Me? No Way!" workshops for Year 9 pupils at Alexandra Park School put youngsters in real-life "street" scenarios tackling public disorder, and showed how even mucking about with toy pistols can end with armed officers pointing guns at you.
PC Robert Michael, Safer Schools Liason Officer for Alexandra Park School, in Bidwell Gardens, Muswell Hill, said: "It went down really well. They learned a lot from it. It's a novelty but it's an eye-opener as well.
"We had a life-sized prison cell with bunk-bed and toilet, and members of the CO19 armed police unit.
"I spoke to the children a couple of days afterwards and they said they didn't realise that it is the choices that they make every day that can affect the rest of their lives."
Members of the youth offending team, fire and ambulance service, prison service and police all worked together over eight workshops to reveal the consequences of stupid and criminal behaviour, some of which can affect young people's job prospects.
"It was such a success the school said they might bring it back for next year's Year 9s as well," added PC Michael.
