Cinema shutdown ends

THE VEIL of secrecy regarding the future of Muswell Hill Odeon has been lifted following the re-opening of the cinema last Thursday.

The cinema closed on December 7 because of a "maintenance issue".

Despite speculation by residents and shopkeepers that infestations and stalled planning applications had forced the shutdown, Odeon announced cracked brickwork in one of the screens was the real problem.

But the company has been criticised for not issuing more information earlier. Councillor Gail Engert (Liberal Democrat, Muswell Hill) said: "Rumour got out of hand because people weren't being properly informed. It would have been far better if they'd let people know what was happening."

John Hajdu, chairman of the Muswell Hill and Fortis Green Association, said he was delighted the rumours were unfounded. An Odeon spokeswoman, said: "Until we could do the investigations we didn't want to worry people unnecessarily.
