YOUNGSTERS gave their loose change for earthquake-hit Haiti this week, helping raise an impressive £1,250 for the disaster appeal.

Pupils at Downhills Primary school in Philip Lane, South Tottenham - including (left to right) Nafiz Awlia, nine, Idris Bouattoura, 10, and Baindu Moore, seven - dug deep and donated their pocket money, while parents and staff also donated to help the survivors of the most devastating natural disaster ever recorded in the Americas.

They used the hundreds of coins to spell out the name of the Caribbean island in 15ft-tall letters on the school's playground last Thursday.

Leslie Church, headteacher, said: "It all came about because parents were talking about the devastation in Haiti, and as a group of staff were saying, 'What will our response be? Can we do something here?'

"We have a lot of Caribbean families as you can imagine."

The school raised £752.86, and a supplier, Reed Employment, has pledged to match the first £500 raised.
